“Seventh Grade” – Gary Soto
Summary
In Seventh Grade is a funny and relatable story about a boy named Victor
who tries to impress a girl named Teresa on the first day of school. He fumbles
a bit—especially in French class—but things turn out okay when the teacher
shows kindness and the girl is impressed anyway. It’s a lighthearted look at
the awkwardness of growing up and having a crush.

Plot element
Exposition - It’s the first day of seventh grade. Victor is excited and
nervous, especially about seeing Teresa, the girl he likes. He wants to impress
her this year.
Rising action - Victor tries to act
cool in front of Teresa and makes some silly mistakes, like pretending to know
French when he doesn’t. He also follows his friend Michael’s advice about how

Trying to impress her, Victor blurts out nonsense French. Mr. Bueller hears it
but doesn’t call him out.

with her French. Victor feels happy and confident.
Analysis & Feelings
I thought this story was sweet and realistic. Victor’s
awkwardness felt very real, and it made me laugh. I liked how Mr. Bueller
remembered what it was like to be young and didn’t embarrass Victor. It
reminded me that sometimes people are kinder than we expect, and that it’s okay
to be yourself, even if you’re nervous. The story had a good mix of humor and
heart.
